The first case of influenza caused by the H3N2 virus has been recorded in Genoa, with a hospitalization in the infectious diseases department of the Policlinico San Martino. The patient is a 76-year-old man with a complex clinical picture and significant symptoms. Matteo Bassetti, director of the department, shared the information via a post on X, emphasizing how the neurological picture is predominant, thus highlighting the tropism of the H3N2 virus for several organs, including the lungs and brain. Bassetti warned that if the beginning of the flu season is already characterized by this situation, a difficult season can be expected.

The H3N2 virus is known as the Australian variant of seasonal influenza and carries an increased risk of complications. These include pneumonia, which has already caused millions of infections and thousands of hospitalizations in Australia and the southern hemisphere. In Italy, the first case of influenza was documented on October 11 in Novara; however, the reporting of this case indicates that the virus is already circulating among the population.

Regarding influenza strains, last year the predominant subtype was AH1N1, derived from swine flu. According to estimates by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), this season a greater circulation of type A viruses is expected, with a prevalence of H3N2, the Australian strain. This change could lead to significant challenges for public health and requires attention from health authorities and the population.

It is essential to carefully monitor the evolution of the situation and take the necessary measures to contain the spread of the virus. Vaccination is a key tool in preventing serious complications associated with seasonal influenza. In addition, it is important that everyone remains informed about the risks and behaviors to adopt in case of flu symptoms to ensure a rapid and effective response to the spread of the H3N2 virus.
