Iran has announced that Israel’s Oct. 26 attack will “definitely” be avenged, with a response that will be “overwhelming,” Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said. While no details were given on the timing or intensity of the planned action against Israel, an Israeli source told The Washington Post that the retaliation could occur “in the coming days,” just as the U.S. election approaches. The United States has pledged support for Israel, and the Pentagon has said it is deploying new forces to the Middle East to confront Iranian threats, including destroyers, fighter jets and B-52 bombers, which will arrive in the region in the coming months.

Washington has warned Tehran against launching further strikes against Israel, stressing that it will not be able to contain a possible Israeli response. A US official said the message was communicated directly to the Iranians, while a former Israeli official said the communication was made through Swiss intermediaries. After last week’s Israeli strike, which hit strategic targets in Iran, the country could use its Axis of Resistance allies in the region for revenge, especially Iraqi militias. Recently, an Iraqi group claimed responsibility for drone strikes against the Israeli city of Eilat; according to the IDF, the drones were intercepted before entering Israeli airspace.

Meanwhile, Israeli bombardment of Gaza continues. Hamas has reported 84 deaths in the northern Strip in the past 24 hours, including more than 50 children. Two Israeli soldiers have also been killed in fighting in northern Gaza. The World Health Organization has reported injuries following an attack on a polio vaccination center during a humanitarian pause.

On the northern front, mediation attempts with Hezbollah appear to have failed. The Lebanese group fired 130 rockets toward Israel in the last day, also hitting areas near Tel Aviv and causing injuries. The Israeli Air Force responded by bombing Lebanon and Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut. In addition, for the first time since the beginning of the conflict, the Israeli Navy conducted a raid in northern Lebanon to capture an alleged commander linked to Hezbollah’s naval activities. The individual is now reportedly being interrogated by Israeli special forces. The UN mission Unifil has denied reports of alleged agreements regarding the operation conducted by the German Navy.
