An argument between young people has resulted in a tragic episode of violence. It all started for a trivial reason, like a dirty shoe caused by a foot being stepped on. From an exchange of words it turned into an assault, culminating in a shooting. In the Naples area, even seemingly insignificant situations can lead to deadly consequences. In San Sebastiano Vesuvio, on the outskirts of Naples, Santo Romano, a boy of just 19 years old with the dream of becoming a footballer, lost his life. He was the goalkeeper of the Micri team, which participates in the Eccellenza championship. Another young man from his team was injured.
The football club expressed its condolences on social media, calling the situation a nightmare that affected everyone. The investigations focused on a minor believed to be involved in the incident; according to reconstructions, the 17-year-old boy could have been seen fleeing on board a minicar after the shooting that took place in Piazza Raffaele Capasso. The authorities have acquired images from surveillance cameras in the area to clarify the details of the incident.
Mayor Giuseppe Panico assured that the police are patrolling the area, stressing that such incidents can happen anywhere. The square where the fight took place is frequented by local youth. To address the situation, a meeting will be held tomorrow at the Town Hall to discuss the necessary security measures.
Initial investigations suggest that Santo Romano may not have been directly involved in the fight that preceded the shooting, as confirmed by some testimonies collected. Residents of the area have reported growing concerns about safety and the increase in youth crime. Recently, a 15-year-old boy was also killed in the center of Naples while riding a scooter.
Other young people have lost their lives in similar situations in recent months; among them Giovanbattista Giogiò Cutolo and Francesco Pio Maimone. The latter was hit by a bullet fired during an argument that arose from a simple stomp.
The Archbishop of Naples, Don Mimmo Battaglia, commented with sadness on the incident, highlighting the urgency of disarming the territories and promoting peace among young people. He urged everyone not to surrender to violence and to seek peaceful solutions to address these growing tragedies.
