Israel Bombs Beirut Surprising Escalation of Violence Underway

The Israeli air force has resumed bombing southern Beirut, following an order from the army to evacuate certain areas. According to information released by Afptv, at least three attacks hit the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, as shown by videos broadcast by the channel. The explosions, accompanied by thick columns of smoke, hit several points in the area after the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of several buildings considered strongholds of Hezbollah. Local media, including Al Jazeera, reported that two people were killed and four others were injured in Israeli air strikes in the Ain el-Remmaneh neighborhood, located in the southeastern part of the Lebanese capital. These attacks are the first Israeli bombings on Beirut in almost a week.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that the US is ready to protect American personnel, Israel and regional allies from threats from Iran. The New York Times reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered Iran’s national security council to prepare for a possible attack on Israel. CNN suggested that such an attack could happen before the US elections.

In other news, the UNRWA office in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the northern West Bank was severely damaged by the Israeli army, which used bulldozers to destroy the facility. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, reported on X that the office, which provided essential services to more than 14,000 Palestinian refugees, including education and healthcare, could no longer be used. Roads, water and electricity infrastructure in the refugee camp were also damaged during the Israeli military operations. In recent days, the Israeli parliament passed a law to ban UNRWA activities in Israel and Palestinian areas.

Finally, the Thai Foreign Minister confirmed the deaths of four Thai citizens in northern Israel due to rocket fire from Lebanon. Maris Sangiampongsa expressed her condolences for the victims and added that another Thai citizen was injured in the attack near the town of Metula.
