A group of alleged cyber-spies had in mind a project defined as “secret in the heart”, as reported by Nunzio Samuele Calamucci, the technical manager of the team, currently under house arrest together with the former policeman Carmine Gallo. This plan, called ‘Safe Harbour’ or ‘Porto Sicuro’, was conceived for security reasons in case of investigations or controls.
According to the documents, the project emerged in May and Calamucci intended to implement it to facilitate the illegal activities of the network operating in Via Pattari. The creation of the company ‘Safe Harbour’, with registered office in Reggio Emilia and a small share capital, had the aim not only to move funds from another lead company called Equalize, but also to relocate the training chain and management of reports and the Beyond platform away from Via Pattari.
On Sept. 5, Calamucci had a phone conversation with Carmine Gallo and Enrico Pazzali, president of Fondazione Fiera Milano, who had suspended himself because of the investigation and who runs Equalize. During the conversation, Calamucci emphasized how the company was evolving into a boutique for long-time customers, and hinted at the new offices they were due to visit soon. “We’re becoming boutiques,” the IT guy repeated.
In response, Pazzali asked if he was referring to their company and Gallo confirmed. Pazzali then added with a laugh that they started out as Ikea, insinuating a certain irony about the company’s transformation. The conversation therefore reveals not only the group’s ambitions but also a certain conversational tone among the members involved in managing operations.
The internal dynamics of the group seem to revolve around the idea of elevating their status in the market, trying to distinguish themselves as an exclusive brand rather than a conventional business. This strategic approach is reflected in their operational choices and in the planning of future activities, demonstrating an awareness of the need to reinvent themselves to remain competitive in a complex and potentially risky environment.
