Being a champion is not just about excelling on the track, but also having the courage to make difficult choices. Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia demonstrated this spirit by refusing to race in Valencia for the 2024 Grand Prix, despite it compromising his chances of winning the world title. His position is based on the devastating impact of recent floods that hit the area, causing over 200 deaths. Bagnaia said: “I am not willing to race in Valencia, not even at the cost of losing the world championship.”

The champion’s words had a significant weight in subsequent decisions, and shortly after his statement the cancellation of the race at the ‘Ricardo Tormo’ circuit was announced. Initially, the organizers had expressed their intention to proceed with the event, but the situation quickly changed. The 20th race of the season, which could have determined the champion between Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, will still take place, but in another location and probably postponed by a week or two compared to the original dates of November 15-17.

Bagnaia stressed that it would be unethical to race in such a context: “I hope they consider that going to race there is not right,” he said. The cancellation of the Grand Prix was made official by Dorna and the international federation after consultations with local authorities. The announcement highlighted how the floods had made it impossible to host the race and how it was necessary to focus resources on relief efforts.

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta had initially expressed hope for the event to go ahead, but ultimately accepted the decision to cancel it to avoid diverting resources from relief efforts. Other riders supported the move; Martin called for respect for the victims, and Marquez stressed the importance of prioritizing relief efforts over racing.

A new circuit is currently being sought to host the final race of the season. Candidates include Spanish venues that have already been used this year, such as Jerez and Barcelona, as well as Portimao in Portugal and Losail in Qatar. Choosing a Spanish venue could also encourage solidarity events to support those affected by the floods. Meanwhile, several sporting events in the region have been cancelled or postponed due to the crisis, including football matches and the Valencia Marathon scheduled for December.
