Four young people from Fonni, aged between 17 and 22, lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred late yesterday afternoon on provincial road 69, on the outskirts of the town. The boys, Michele Coinu (21), Lorenzo Figus (17), Marco Innocenti (18) and Michele Soddu (22), were thrown from a Fiat Punto that skidded on a curve, overturned and ended up in a ditch. The four worked at the Fattorie Gennegertu dairy, owned by the mayor Daniela Falconi. The bodies were found shortly before midnight, after the relatives had raised the alarm because they were not at dinner. The reconstruction of the accident indicates that the car left the road without signs of braking; it is estimated that death occurred between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m.
The search began after friends and colleagues, worried about their absence, began looking for them when they did not show up for the dinner scheduled at the dairy. About a hundred people searched the streets around Fonni to find the red Fiat in which the young people were traveling. The bodies were discovered only after several hours of searching; one person shone a flashlight on the embankment, bringing the tragic truth to light.
The boys were very close and active in the community. It is believed that they were returning home after helping one of their friends with the pigs. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the church of Santa Maria dei Martiri in Fonni, with a day of mourning proclaimed by Mayor Falconi. In a message to the press, the mayor expressed the community’s deep sorrow: “This is not a good day; four broken lives have left us destroyed.”
The tragedy also affected neighboring communities, such as Desulo, where the mayor declared a day of mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. “Our community is also mourning these beloved boys,” said the mayor. The world of horse racing and Nuorese football also expressed their condolences for the families of the victims, paying homage to the memory of the four young men who died prematurely.
