Security in Italy is not compromised, but it requires attention and improvements. It is important to avoid unfounded alarmism. The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, stressed that the Ministry’s IT systems are proving to be secure, with no evidence of external attacks. However, more careful management is essential to prevent possible abuses. Piantedosi spoke during the inauguration of the academic year at the University of Molise.
The Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, also spoke on the topic. He announced that the Cybersecurity Agency has prepared investments of over 715 million euros to strengthen the IT services and systems of the public administration. This funding covers the years from 2022 to 2024 and will also extend to 2025-2026, including resources from the PNRR and the national strategy for cybersecurity. These projects aim to improve the IT defenses of local and central public administrations, also establishing a Security Operation Center (SOC) to monitor cyber threats.
Nordio highlighted the importance of these investments in the fight against cyber attacks, acknowledging that the entire world has been unprepared for these attacks. He added that malicious actors often act before institutions can adopt adequate rules to counter them, but there is confidence that they will soon be effectively controlled.
In parallel, an investigation is developing in Varese regarding an alleged cyber attack against the email of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. According to the reconstruction of the investigators, a group led by Nunzio Samuele Calamucci attempted to have the CEO of a company resign through emails sent from an internal account, pretending to be an anonymous employee reporting irregularities.
Investigations have revealed wiretaps between Calamucci and Carmine Gallo regarding this operation. The Carabinieri are analyzing all the devices seized during recent searches and arrests related to the case.
Finally, during the Conference of Group Leaders, the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the dossier that emerged in the ongoing Milan investigation was proposed. The president of the senators of Italia Viva, Enrico Borghi, announced that the bill will be discussed in the Constitutional Affairs Commission.
