The Cgil and Uil unions have announced an eight-hour general strike action, accompanied by local demonstrations, scheduled for Friday, November 29. During a press conference, general secretaries Maurizio Landini and Pierpaolo Bombardieri explained that they are taking to the streets to demand significant changes to the budget maneuver, considered inadequate to address the country’s problems. Furthermore, the unions are demanding an increase in the purchasing power of wages and pensions, along with greater investments in healthcare, education, public services and industrial policies.

Bombardieri announced that the government has called the unions for Tuesday, November 5 at Palazzo Chigi, but stressed that the meeting will be held on a budget already presented to the Chambers, thus limiting the possibility of making changes. He added that if the government were to show willingness to consider the union proposals, the representatives could review the decision to proceed with the strike. Landini called for radical changes to the budget rather than simple adjustments and highlighted the importance of reconsidering previous laws such as the related work and security bill.

Landini said that in the days leading up to November 29, the unions intend to urge the government to review not only the current budget but also the way it interacts with trade unions. A tour of the country is planned to hold assemblies and meetings in workplaces, with the aim of changing current economic and social policies.

In response to the opinions of the Cisl on the maneuver, which declared itself satisfied with some aspects, Landini reiterated his different position. He expressed respect for the positions of his colleagues of the Cisl but clarified that their evaluation is diametrically opposed to his.

The League commented on the two unions' decision by calling it ridiculous, expressing disagreement on the salary increase for 14 million workers with incomes up to 40,000 euros. Instead, it thanked those workers' representatives who propose constructive solutions instead of limiting themselves to protesting.
