Dana, an intense meteorological phenomenon characterized by heavy rains and winds, hit the Iberian Peninsula today, causing significant flooding especially in the southern and eastern regions. In Alcudia, in the province of Valencia, one person was reported missing, while in Letur, in Albacete, at least six people are missing due to the overflowing of a river that generated a waterspout in the center of the country. Local authorities confirmed this information. Due to adverse weather conditions, a high-speed train connecting Madrid to Malaga derailed; fortunately, there were no injuries among the passengers who were transferred to another train. Rail connections between Madrid and Valencia were temporarily suspended due to the flooding of several lines in the province of Valencia, where many areas were severely affected by heavy rains and tornadoes.
In Utiel, a town of about 11,000 people located 83 kilometers from Valencia on the east coast, dozens of residents were stranded in their homes due to flooding and damage caused by the storm. Mayor Ricardo Gabaldon said at least three neighborhoods were cut off and highlighted the devastating extent of the damage, but stressed that the priority now was to rescue those trapped. Civil protection, together with the Military Emergency Unit, are trying to access the affected areas to assist residents. The local government has set up shelters in the sports hall to provide assistance to citizens in need. Meanwhile, in Valencia the port has been closed due to the strong storm surges generated by the storm.
Flooding has also caused significant damage in other regions such as Andalusia, especially in Almeria, and in the community of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as in the Levante area. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation and provide support to the areas most affected by this wave of bad weather.
