Health Minister Orazio Schillaci commented on the November 20 strike by saying that he has never had conflicts with doctors, being a professional in the sector himself. He announced that together with the Minister of Economy Giorgetti they are working to improve the tax exemption of the specificity allowance for doctors. Schillaci clarified that there is no intention to privatize the health service, underlining the importance of managing available resources effectively to reward health workers and support citizens, especially the most vulnerable.
The National Health Fund will also see an increase with the next budget, reaching the record figure of 140 billion in 2026. However, he reiterated the importance of using these funds efficiently, always placing citizens' needs at the center. The priority of the current budget is aimed at healthcare personnel; many of the planned initiatives aim to make working in public healthcare more attractive.
Schillaci also highlighted a “heavy legacy” left by years of cuts and dysfunctions that have never been resolved, which have had significant repercussions on the health system. He stressed the need for targeted and rapid actions, supported by constant monitoring. This approach could allow for the recovery of funds intended for doctors and nurses and help reduce waiting times for patients.
The measures underway are designed to bring about much-needed changes in the short term. The minister expressed confidence that these interventions will finally address the critical issues that have accumulated over the years, thus improving the quality of services offered and the attractiveness of the sector for health professionals.
