Rai has decided to interrupt the program “L’Altra Italia”, a political talk show hosted by Antonino Monteleone, due to disappointing ratings. The program, despite the promotion of the last episode, has struggled to gain the interest of the public, increasingly active on new communication platforms. The In-depth Department of Viale Mazzini has announced that the final episode will be aired on October 31 and that in the coming days a new format more suitable for the future will be evaluated together with the host and the Marketing and Distribution departments.
The program debuted on October 3, but the results were well below expectations, with only 276,000 viewers and a share of 1.8%. The situation worsened further on October 10, with the same number of viewers but a share percentage that dropped to 1.6%. The evening of October 17 saw a real debacle with a share of 0.99% and just 169,000 viewers, numbers defined as “never seen before in the history of Rai” by the Democratic Party. Even on October 25 there was no significant improvement: the program totaled only 206,000 viewers and a share of 1.2%.
Monteleone had declared that his format would spare no one, but the reception from the public was far from what was hoped for. In contrast, the return of the series “Don Matteo”, starring Raoul Bova in the role of Don Massimo, was a great success. During the same time slot, “L’Altra Italia” found itself competing with other established programs such as “Le Iene”, “Piazzapulita”, “Dritto e Rovescio” and “Splendida Cornice”.
The ratings problem is not unique to Monteleone; traditionally, Thursday has been a difficult day for Rai2. In recent years, several talk shows have faced similar difficulties in this time slot after the golden era of Michele Santoro. Among the programs that had little success were “Nemo - Nessuno escluso” with Enrico Lucci and Valentina Petrini, “Popolo Sovrano” with Alessandro Sortino, “Seconda Linea” with Alessandro Giuli and Francesca Fagnani, “Titolo V” with Roberto Vicaretti and Francesca Romana Elisei and “Che c’è di nuovo?” hosted by Ilaria D’Amico.
