The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into illicit access to computer systems, violations of privacy and unauthorized practice of the profession, involving a group accused of dossier-building and unauthorized data collection. There are currently no suspects in the proceedings, which are being conducted in parallel with the one already underway in Milan, coordinated by the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office. The investigations in the capital were launched last spring and are being entrusted to the Postal Police, as reported by Today.it. The group known as ‘Squadra Fiore’ is also said to be composed of former members of the police force and operated in an apartment located in the north-east of Rome, collaborating with foreign clients.

In February 2023, Vincenzo De Marzio, a former Carabiniere involved in the investigation into illegal dossiers, allegedly had a meeting with Nunzio Calamucci, a hacker currently under house arrest. During this meeting, they allegedly spoke with two unidentified men who may be linked to Israeli intelligence. This information emerged from a detailed report by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of Varese, which also mentioned the presence of individuals associated with Israeli intelligence in the offices located in Via Pattari, home of Enrico Pazzali’s Equalize and managed by former policeman Carmine Gallo.

Furthermore, the Council of Ministers has been convened for 4:00 p.m. and on the agenda is a decree law containing urgent measures regarding the judicial system. This measure includes provisions regarding the judiciary staff, management positions and investigative competence on cybercrime. The proposal was presented by the Presidency of the Council together with the Ministry of Justice. The ongoing investigations and legislative measures demonstrate the growing attention of the authorities towards cybercrime and violations of privacy, highlighting the complexity of the dynamics at play in this area.
