A 29-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of aggravated murder after her newborn baby was found lifeless in an apartment in Piove di Sacco, in the province of Padua. The information was confirmed by sources close to the investigation. The woman is currently under surveillance at the hospital in Padua, where she was taken following the rescue of 118.
Investigators are considering the hypothesis of infanticide, since the little girl died from causes considered unnatural, according to the first observations made by health workers. Further investigations, including an autopsy and a report by the coroner, will be necessary to verify this theory.
The baby was born at home, and after giving birth the mother was transferred to the hospital to receive the necessary care and to clarify the details of the situation. The baby’s body was found inside a building that houses a nightclub and a dormitory for women. It was a neighbor who alerted the emergency numbers.
Deputy Prosecutor Sergio Dini also intervened at the scene of the incident, following the investigation and listening to the witnesses present. The situation remains very delicate and we are now awaiting the results of the medical tests that could provide further information useful to the investigation. The investigators are focused on reconstructing exactly what happened in the moments before the newborn was found in order to shed light on such a tragic event.
