Yamandu Orsi, the left-wing Frente Amplio party’s candidate for Uruguay’s presidential election, is set to face Alvaro Delgado of the center-right National Party (PN) in the second round scheduled for November 24. The news was confirmed by all the main television stations in the South American country through four different projections. In the first round, Orsi obtained 43.2% of the vote, while Delgado recorded 27%, according to data provided by the Equipos Consultores institute. The opinion polling institute Cifra also reports similar percentages: 44% for Orsi and 27% for Delgado. Analyses by the other two polling agencies in Uruguay, Opción and Factum, show consistent results.
This election also saw two referendums: one on social security and the other on nighttime searches by police forces. Both referendums failed to pass. Projections regarding the new composition of the Uruguayan parliament show significant divergences. Some forecasts indicate a possible Frente Amplio majority in the Senate, while others suggest a tie that could require a second round or a prevalence of the center-right coalition formed by the PN, the Colorado party and other smaller groups in the Chamber of Deputies.
However, all research institutes agree that only three parties will have representation in the Senate: the Frente Amplio, the Partido Nacional and the Colorado party.
