Marco Bucci was elected the new governor of Liguria, with a victory that was consolidated only after the counting of the last ballots. The gap is a few thousand votes out of a total of about one million and 400 thousand voters. Andrea Orlando, his political opponent, contacted him to congratulate him.
The center-right claims this success after a competition characterized by ups and downs, highlighting how the region is split in two: the center-left obtains good results in the eastern center, in Genoa and in La Spezia, while the Savona and Imperia areas are more aligned with the center-right, thanks also to Claudio Scajola’s commitment in selecting the candidate. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her congratulations to Bucci on social media, stating that the center-right has demonstrated its ability to respond to citizens' expectations and underlining the abilities of the administrator who will lead Liguria. Antonio Tajani also expressed satisfaction for the “victory of good government”, while Claudio Scajola rejoiced for Bucci’s election as president of the region.
A surprising aspect emerges from the Democratic Party (PD), which obtained over 28% of the votes, followed by Brothers of Italy with 14.8%, Bucci’s civic list at 9.4%, the League at 8.5%, Forza Italia at 7.9%, Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra at 6.2% and Orgoglio Liguria at 5.7%. The Five Star Movement stood at only 4.6%, a sharp decline compared to the previous European and political elections. It is clear that Bucci’s victory does not reach the numbers of the past elections when Giovanni Toti was reconfirmed with over 56% of the votes.
Toti left office due to legal problems but remains an influential figure in this political context. In the center-left there is also a strong decline of the Five Star Movement, complicated by internal tensions between Giuseppe Conte and Beppe Grillo. Orlando hoped for a comeback through a broader alliance but the results negatively surprised the party members. Renzi commented on the situation by saying that those who veto lose; the response from the M5S was not long in coming, accusing Renzi of having contributed to the loss of consensus.
