Over the past year, the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research has invested 26 million euros in cancer research and treatment at the Candiolo Institute-Irccs. This data emerged during the presentation of the twentieth Social and Sustainability Report, a significant milestone. This financial commitment is made possible thanks to a total of 41 thousand donations, 270 thousand 5x1000 subscriptions, as well as inheritances and bequests.
The second batch of the ‘Cantiere Candiolo’ project has recently begun, which involves the construction of a new Biobank. This structure, which will occupy an area of 3 thousand square meters, will be dedicated to the conservation of tumor cell samples and will require an investment of 10 million euros. During the digital event dedicated to the Social Balance Sheet, hosted by the director of La Stampa Andrea Malaguti, significant data regarding the Candiolo Institute were shared. 291 researchers work here in a total space dedicated to research equal to 10 thousand square meters, with 40 active laboratories and approximately one hundred beds; in 2023 alone, 6,235 patients were hospitalized.
Allegra Agnelli, president of the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research, emphasized the importance of the synergy between doctors, researchers and the staff who work daily at the institute. She also highlighted the constant support of supporters and the trust placed by patients in the work carried out by health professionals. Furthermore, she expressed pride in seeing many young international researchers return to Italy and contribute to the work of the institute.
Gianmarco Sala, director of the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research, described the nine macro-research projects currently underway in Candiolo and provided details on the studies conducted by its researchers in the various laboratories. He also highlighted how the Foundation has guaranteed approximately 1 million and 400 thousand outpatient services in the field of oncology care. Another important aspect concerns the continuous updating of the technologies used: in the new spaces of interventional radiology, two new Tomotherapy have been installed, for a total investment of close to 7 million euros.
