Matilde Lorenzi, a talented young skier, is currently hospitalized in intensive care at the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano after an accident during training on the glacier of Val Senales, in Alto Adige. The promise of the Italian ski scene fell this morning while she was skiing down the Grawand G1 slope. The dynamics of the accident indicate that the skis separated on a flat section, causing the edges to lose contact with the snow. Matilde hit her face violently on the ice.

Immediately after the fall, one of her skis came off and the girl ended up off the slope. The coaches present and the Carabinieri of the Selva Val Gardena Training Center intervened promptly to provide assistance. After being intubated by paramedics who arrived by helicopter, Matilde was rushed to the hospital in Bolzano, where her condition immediately appeared critical. It emerged that all safety regulations on the track and on the ski lift had been respected; the protections along the route had been installed correctly. Consequently, there is no responsibility to be attributed to the managers of the lift and no investigations will be launched into the incident.

The accident therefore seems to be due to an unfortunate fatality, as also confirmed by the testimonies collected by the Carabinieri. Matilde Lorenzi will turn 20 on November 15 and is a member of the Centro Sportivo Esercito as part of the junior women’s team. On Instagram she shares moments of her passions: she loves the sea, cooking sweets for her loved ones and reading. In an interview given to Rai in 2017 she spoke of her love for skiing and her future dreams: she wants to continue competing in sports but also explore the world of fashion and photography.

The young athlete has already achieved significant milestones in her career, including the Italian overall and youth title in the super-G in Sarentino and good positions at the Junior World Championships in Chatel, France last year. She is also known for her results in the European Cup, where she obtained an eleventh place in the super-G in St. Moritz in December 2023. Matilde was supposed to participate in Giant Slalom trials in Sweden but the weather conditions led the staff to choose Val Senales for pre-season training, a popular location among several European national teams for athletic preparation on the glacier.
