In 2023, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere reached a record high of 420 parts per million (ppm), corresponding to 151% compared to pre-industrial values. This information was provided by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The main causes of this increase in CO2, according to the WMO, are attributable to large forest fires, a probable decrease in absorption by forests and high emissions generated by human activity. In 2022, the concentration of CO2 was 417.9 ppm, while in 2021 it stood at 415.7 ppm. Going back to 1750, CO2 levels were stable at 280 ppm. Over the past two decades, the amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere has increased by 11.4%.
