Over the past year, the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research has invested 26 million euros in cancer care and research at the Candiolo Institute-Irccs. This data emerged during the presentation of the twentieth Social and Sustainability Report. This financial commitment was possible thanks to 41 thousand donations, 270 thousand 5x1000 subscriptions, as well as inheritances and bequests.

Furthermore, the second batch of the ‘Cantiere Candiolo’ has been launched, dedicated to the creation of a new Biobank. This structure will occupy an area of 3 thousand square meters intended for the conservation of tumor cell samples, involving an investment of 10 million euros. The presentation of the Social Balance Sheet took place during a digital event moderated by the director of La Stampa, Andrea Malaguti. 291 researchers currently work at the Candiolo Institute, located on the outskirts of Turin. The area dedicated to research is 10 thousand square meters and has 40 laboratories and specialized units; there are approximately one hundred beds available and 6,235 patients were hospitalized during 2023.

“The secret of Candiolo’s success,” says Allegra Agnelli, president of the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research, “lies in the synergy between doctors, researchers and all the staff who work daily at the institute, together with our loyal supporters and patients who with their trust encourage us to constantly improve.” Agnelli expresses particular pride in seeing many young international researchers return to Italy, especially to Candiolo, after gaining professional experience abroad.

Gianmarco Sala, director of the Piedmont Foundation for Cancer Research, explains that nine macro-research projects are active at Candiolo. In addition to these, there are studies conducted by 291 researchers in the various laboratories of the facility. In the clinical field, the Foundation has guaranteed over one million four hundred thousand outpatient services. Sala also underlines the importance of continuous technological updating; in the new spaces dedicated to interventional radiology, two new Tomotherapy machines have been installed with a total investment of around seven million euros.

The Foundation’s ongoing commitment is reflected not only in the results achieved in patient care but also in the strengthening of the infrastructure dedicated to oncology research. The initiatives undertaken demonstrate a strong desire to continuously innovate and improve therapeutic practices through strategic investments and effective collaborations between different professionals within the institute. The collaborative climate created by this fusion of experts and supporters translates into significant progress in the fight against cancer and offers hope to patients seeking the best available treatments.
