Shortly after the start of the race, a collision at the back led to the safety car being deployed. The cars involved were those of Albon and Tsunoda, with the latter being closed down by Gasly in the Alpine. At the start, Verstappen overtook Sainz, who was starting from pole position, to take the lead.
