For the first time since 2012, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which leads the ruling coalition, has lost its majority in the Lower House. This marks a significant setback for Shigeru Ishiba, the new prime minister and leader of the conservative party, who has been in office for only a month. The LDP has governed Japan almost continuously since the postwar period. Shortly before the polls closed, early exit poll results indicated that the LDP will not be able to retain the 256 seats it had before the dissolution of the chambers out of a total of 465 seats available in the parliamentary elections.
