Trieste has abandoned its image as a peripheral city in Italy and Europe, positioning itself now at the center of a Europe that shares common values such as roots, freedom, democracy, work and opportunities. Thanks to its strategic geographical position, Trieste has the opportunity to establish itself as a relevant logistics platform for the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

These considerations emerged in the message of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the return of the city to Italy, during the flag-raising ceremony held in Piazza Unità d’Italia. Meloni underlined the considerable growth opportunities for Trieste, which could derive from the development of the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor. This project has been defined as “strategic fundamental”, highlighting Italy’s commitment to contribute to its realization within the G20.

The Prime Minister described Trieste as a city that represents both the most authentic Italian identity and the Central European one. She spoke of the city as a natural bridge between Latin culture and the traditions of the neighboring Slavic and Germanic peoples. Meloni hypothesized a key role for Trieste also in the relationship with the Western Balkans, a region historically significant for Italy. She exposed the importance of what happens beyond the Adriatic and the responsibility that our country has towards this area, underlining that it cannot remain excluded from the European community.

In this context, Meloni announced that “Italy will continue to commit itself to ensuring that the process of integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union continues with determination”. Furthermore, Trieste could play a crucial role thanks to its companies and its productive fabric in promoting Italy’s geopolitical vocation towards the wider Mediterranean and Africa. This commitment is part of the Mattei Plan, a positive and equal approach towards African peoples.

During the flag-raising celebration in Piazza Unità d’Italia, a strong collective emotion was expressed: the Tricolour was waving from the windows while the Frecce Tricolori were crossing the sky. Meloni highlighted how the soul of Trieste is marked by a profound Italianness that calls for new perspectives and a proud future.

The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing how Trieste represents an essential part of the Italian identity and how important it is to support its ambitions to build a better future.
