For astronomy enthusiasts, the Nights of the Giants will take place on October 26 and 27, an event dedicated to the two most impressive planets in our Solar System: Jupiter and Saturn. This initiative was organized by the Unione Astrofili Italiani, which invited its delegations from all over Italy to participate with special events aimed at everyone, young and old. During these evenings, it will be possible to deepen your knowledge of these two gas giants, discover their peculiarities and the history of their explorations, as well as being able to observe them directly through telescopes.

Numerous activities are planned throughout the country. Among the places involved are the Astronomical Park ‘Livio Gratton’ located in Rocca di Papa and the Provincial Astronomical Observatory of Montarrenti in the province of Siena, where telescopes with apertures of 53 and 15 centimeters respectively will be available. The ‘Giovanni Paolo II’ Park in Syracuse will also participate in the initiative with a free evening open to the public. Other participating places include the Orzali Park in Monsummano Terme (Pistoia) and the Casentinesi Forests National Park, which is located on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.

In addition, the Righi Astronomical Observatory in Genoa will participate in the event while also hosting the Science Festival. Here, visitors will have the opportunity to explore not only Jupiter and Saturn but also Jupiter’s four main satellites: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. In addition, it will be possible to learn more about Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. With a bit of luck, during these evenings it will be possible to admire the Great Red Spot on Jupiter: it is a vast anticyclonic storm that has been raging for at least three centuries and is so large that it could contain three Earth-sized planets inside it.

The Nights of the Giants are a unique opportunity for skywatchers to approach astronomy in an engaging and direct way. These evenings not only offer educational opportunities but also magical moments to contemplate the immensity of the universe.
