Eduardo De Filippo, a figure emblematically linked to the theatrical tradition of Naples, represents a symbol of the profound changes that have characterized Italy in the transition from rural life to modernity. October 31, 1984 marks the death of this extraordinary actor and author at the age of 84. De Filippo was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of broadcasting theater on television, an intuition that revolutionized the way of enjoying his works.
On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of his death, Rai Cultura celebrates Eduardo with a project entitled “Eduardo 40”, curated by Felice Cappa. Starting from October 28, every day at 4:15 pm and from November 2 also on Saturdays in prime time (with subsequent reruns on Raiplay), his most significant works will be shown in chronological order. This initiative offers an extraordinary overview of his talent, created in collaboration with the De Filippo Foundation, and encompasses over fifty years of Italian and theatrical history.
Eduardo’s creative journey begins in 1922 with “Uomo e galantuomo” and extends to “Gli esami non finito mai” in 1973. Felice Cappa emphasizes how Eduardo was not only an exceptional interpreter, but also a writer of great depth: “It is important to recognize his contribution as an author in addition to the charisma he showed on stage”.
Alongside iconic works such as “Filumena Marturano”, “Natale in casa Cupiello” (which will be presented both in the original 1932 version on November 4 and in the 1977 color reworking on December 28), “Questi fantasma” and “Ditegli sempre di sì”, the Neapolitan adaptation of “Il cappelli a sonagli”, made in 1936 from Pirandello’s text, will also be shown. In addition, two original documentaries are planned: “Il giorno di Eduardo”, scheduled for November 9 at 11 p.m., which explores his experience as a senator for life and his fight against the problems of the juvenile prison system; and “Camilleri racconta Eduardo”, scheduled for November 30 at the same time.
Closing this celebration will be a new production of “Gennareniello”, directed and performed by Lino Musella with Tonino Taiuti for the Stabile di Napoli, scheduled for January 25. This project not only pays homage to the artistic career of Eduardo De Filippo but also invites new generations to rediscover a rich and essential cultural heritage for understanding the history of Italian theater.
