During the night, heavy rain hit the municipalities of Riparbella, Castellina Marittima, Santa Luce, Montescudaio and Terricciola, located in the province of Pisa. The rainfall caused streams and canals to overflow, flooding streets and homes. Several cars were swept away by the water and firefighters intervened to rescue the occupants.
According to the Pisa Fire Department, the rescue operation resulted in the recovery of 15 people, many of whom were trapped on the roofs of cars or in canals. Most of the rescues occurred in the Le Badie area of Castellina Marittima, with two more people rescued in Santa Luce. In the early hours of the morning, firefighters were called to Via Provinciale Vicarese in Vicopisano for an accident involving a car that had gone off the road and ended up in a flooded ditch; the driver was safely extracted.
The mayor of Riparbella, Salvatore Neri, shared on Facebook that 120 mm of rain has fallen in the area in the last three hours, an unprecedented event. Five ordinary firefighter teams are currently operating in the area along with three teams specialized in flood rescue; work has already begun to empty the homes of water.
Neri also reported that the Botra River has flooded and there are still people who need to be reached by rescue. He also reported that the bridge in Sorbugnano has been destroyed and there are landslides along road 68. Municipal teams and volunteer associations are working on the ground to restore the main road system and the Municipal Operations Center has been activated to monitor the situation; it is possible to contact the Municipality to report emergencies.
The Municipality reported via Facebook that the main roads are slowly being restored but advises caution when driving on the roads due to the presence of mud and debris. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the population. In Terricciola, the Cascina river flooded in the La Fraschetta area where a family with small children was evacuated; however, via della Cascina was reopened after reaching normal levels.
In Montescudaio, which has suffered serious damage due to recent heavy rains, the Fiorino hamlet has been flooded while Casagiustri and the provincial road have accumulations of debris. Also in the Livorno area there have been floods reported in Cecina; interventions by the Civil Protection and firefighters have also been carried out in Rosignano.
The municipality of Riparbella urged citizens not to travel unless absolutely necessary since the only practicable road was congested making it difficult for emergency vehicles to pass. The president of the Province of Pisa reiterated the importance of prudence, inviting caution when traveling: the damage caused by the rains mainly concerns
